I find this breakdown uplifting and confusing all at once. I have noticed a changing appreciation in what I reread from childhood. Yet do we not learn the strengths of prose by studying it done right? Diana Wynne Jones even wrote an essay impressing the importance of studying the classics for the sake of writing in her book Reflections on the Magic of Writing. Perhaps you’ll get a chance to read the essay and share your thoughts some time… 🙂
I will get that chance! I agree…with both ideas you mention. A tangle with greatness changes our voices…well, alters our selves… I think. Looking forward to it!
Aha! I thought I had a more specific essay to give you, but there’s actually two that fit my point: “Inventing the Middle Ages”and “The Value of Learning Anglo-Saxon.” There might be another, but I’m certain of those two.
most excellent…
