II.

Moving toward the mighty visions

the forearm

fighting good and evil

obsessed by both

from all sides

underwritten

with messaging death

.

stark full dreams

veins wound deep

in muscle

19th-20th centuries

with all the promise

in music

and results

.

nightmarish stark and full

.

an arm-wrestle bind

Dostoevsky, Schiele and Pessoa

self-portraited heteronymity

stark, full, and free

to battle each self

against its own ideas

and to fail

seeking the hope

.

turning at the elbow

into suicide

bleary-eyed will

and glitz of fantasy

David Foster Wallace

and kin

struggling still

full of stark dreams

.

leaping Lorca

Schiele-selves

inside others

yet not actually

sharp turn at the elbow

strength unto strength

to follow through

.

with one’s own hand

.

sliding over shoulder and neck

(only there to support the head

and hold it all together)

moving on to its description

sketchy self-portraiture

Imagined Hike with Companion

(for S.K.)

Looking at you

as into a tree

full of running water,

that steady,

that moving,

an attempt at description

of cognitive complexity

and integrity,

my friend

you exhibit fidelity,

similitude of redundancy,

my familiar

coupled with surprise

or invention,

the information

your embeddedness enacts

with this world

of flowing waters

and sturdy trees.

β€œHENRY” is a new bi-yearly magazine in Le Zaporogue’s free press collection.

It is a magazine about literature, arts, music, philosophy and those who make it by those who make it, in other words, writers, artists, musicians and philosophers.

It will be a heartfelt magazine about passion and creation, far from the traditional academic literary mags.

It’s all about first-hand experience, thoughts and feelings.

Of course, loving amateurs are welcome, as β€œHENRY” hates snobbery and small mindedness.

It is a place of freedom and quality, where there is no sterile categorizations, nor themes – all genres are welcome, allΒ  periods, all fields.

The editors are Seb Doubinsky and Lisa Thatcher, both enlightened amateurs in a variety of fields.

The magazine is named after Henry Miller, a writer we both have a great passion for.

Call for Submissions

The first publication of Henry will come out in January 2013.

Gabrielle's avatarthe contextual life

At a time when publishers are concerned about ebook pricing, many believing that going below a certain dollar amount devalues both the book and the author (a theory I am sympathetic to), an intriguing project from a major publisher is taking place. Forty Stories, a labor of love spearheaded by Cal Morgan, publisher and editorial director at HarperCollins, is available today as a free ebook through all major retailers.

In January of 2009, Morgan started an online community for short story writers called Fifty-Two Stories. As the name suggests, each week a new story would be posted for free on the website. For all you trivia junkies, Simon Van Booy’s β€œThe Missing Statues” was first. From 2009 until the first half of 2011 the output was consistent. Then, in August of last year, something happened and only one story was posted that month. Someone would have…

Composing letters is good exercise for writing.Β  Imagined audience and relation, fitting language to a function with a purpose.

Dear WordPress Users:

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  I regret to inform you.Β  I’d like to congratulate you.Β  It has come to our attention.Β  In the matter regarding.Β  Allow me to introduce myself.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  The address sets a tone.Β  There is little to waste.Β  Readers can be lost in a matter of moments, of letters, of marks.

Sex.Β  Hate.Β  Cookies.Β  Pups.Β  Nudity.Β  Self-loathing or injuries sustained.Β  Rants.Β  Cuss.Β  Sexual organs.Β  Deviant tastes or behaviors.Β  Righteousness.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  These terms as keywords capture the bulk of contemporary humanity.Β  Money, sugar, self-sustenance/survival/success, fame.Β  Beauty, distress, the hideous, tragedy and laughs work as well.Β  Also superlatives.Β  And challenges.

You’ve never seen a _____ this size!Β  Fires burn out of control, lives lost…  Wowza! She’s got _____!!Β Β  You have no idea _____!Β  Did you ever imagine _____ could be so good?!

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Direct-ion.Β  Scan billboards and headlines, logos and slogans – these things are devised to capture attention, activate interest.Β  Use imagery and images – somehow we’ve evolved into a very visual culture – we taste, hear, touch and listen – with our eyes!Β  Watch a video with the sound turned off.Β  Gaze at some pictures of food.Β  Read poems.Β  I challenge you (smiley-face) – what are you unable to sense…just using your eyes?Β  (Whatever it is will cause you to act).

Action works.Β  Activate.Β  Stimulate.Β  Request.Β  Invite.Β  Offer.Β  Command.Β  Insult.

You really have no concept of what you’re doing here, do you?Β  I mean, reading this?Β  Hoping for some pleasurable payoff of insight or delight!Β  Something succulent or soothing, entertaining or erotic, secrets or solutions.Β  You selfish bastards!Β  Give a little!Β  It’s all β€˜what’s in it for ME!?’  Sucking the world dry like these pages…

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Give people something to find that they’ll consider β€œwrong” – people LOVE to feel β€œright.”  Scapegoating works well – and it can be anything – people will follow: bottled water, big government, Christianity, children, homosexuals, genres, stupidity…the lemmings will leap.

Dear WordPress Users:

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  I regret to inform you that the following letters are not art.Β

β€œWorks of art represent webs of sounds, movements and ideas… Human beings are contradictory… Freedom is the law of human nature…At the basis of every artistic work, every stage in artistic construction, lie similar principles of revealing the contradictions… artistic compositions show the fallacy of simple solutions… one can do anything, but there is no purpose…”

(all Viktor Shklovsky, from β€œOn the Dissimilarity of the Similar”)

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Dear WordPress Users:

I urge you: exercise freedom and complexity!

Utilize everything!
