The following is the first section of an extensive poem-making that Iโve been working at for some time now. ย I will release some of its sections over the following weeks. ย I would love commentary, critique, this pseudo-confessional area is not one that I feel confident in, and is difficult work for me. ย An attempt to be open to tunneled and tunneling desires and dreams, presuppositions and perspectives that Iโve formed and have been formed in meโฆin shaping this particular way of being in/toward/with the world. ย Thank you for caring enough to read, and in advance to the generosity that would involve your commenting/responses.

I’ve been sort of swirling in a kind of malconfident funk of late…performing exercises and blatherings just to keep the language flowing…today felt like a threshold…one of those – “if the flow don’t show – i’m constipated” sorts of things… many of my favorite bloggers have been moving toward a very free and open bursting of expression/language/image this summer and it’s really been fueling me, but i haven’t been able to open my own valves for some reason. ย I want to say – wow – there are a bunch of really talented creative persons making stuff on WordPress – and the virtual company means more than I think (I think). ย So thanks to all of you for working so hard to MAKE and BECOME – it’s inspiring – believe me…and whether you knew it or not – today you all conspired to inject or confront me with the Archaic Torso of Apollo – a magnificent accomplishment – and Rilke’s “you must revise your life” – a fine firm foot to me arse…
Instigating Change
And then things simply have to change.ย Some blogger posted (today) that โthis is a little sillyโ and โlet the world tell you what you need to doโ – but the world hasnโt said anything, and still it made felt sense.ย Someone else (somewhere in the world) decided to go home for the very tawdry reasons that make anything profound, while another (clearly from another section of the globe) has been taken by the moon.
What does that tell you?
Things have got to change.ย Itโs not working.ย Youโre not working (but of course you are, (I am) which isnโt what I meant, what I mean being of very little effect).
There are the readingsโฆ
Plus all over the world (that is telling you nothing) there are people traveling and taking photographs โ but those show, they donโt tell.
A friend did email to say โdonโt give upโ from a far different location on the earth, but perhaps the โearthโ is not the โworld,โ perhaps world is an elsewhere?ย Or simply a voice I cannot hear, something divine.
I keep calling myself โyouโ as if that might make me other, but even I know you canโt escape yourself.
So I donโt.
Iโm intrigued by folks who can write about themselves as if they were themselves and a part of world or simply made it so by writing.ย That stuff moves me, true or not.
I spent my day designing characters.ย Jim could never lie because he didnโt believe in language (or was it people?).ย Leonhardt could always tell the difference but is unable to comprehend the same.ย An author left an erotic drawing on his desk upon his death, causing great anxiety for his biographer, utterly incapable of fitting it into his knowledge of said subject.
Those arenโt me.ย So something needs to change, you tell yourself.ย Youโre lost in language, but the labyrinth is becoming a pattern.
Thereโs a trove of โpromptsโ out there to help you find your way (is that the โworldโ?) but inspiration keeps feeling artificial.
You think it might just be the heat, a metaphorical dehydration, you read about a wife who tells her husband he should find someone else with whom to talk about nothing, and you heard echoes of the voices in your home.ย Like the world saying things that almost register but you simply canโt believe.ย Itโs nothing, like that.
You challenged yourself this past year to โget personalโ, if you wrote real near what hurts others might hurt too, and people like that โ empathy, identity, a pingback from the world โ but it never became interesting, the personal, you kept sounding like yourself.
And wrote these letters you called journals, out of some idea (I guess) that a world might be within you that could tell you what you need.ย Or like Laurie Sheck said (sheโs really in the world); that โskin has no choice but to converse with the worldโ โ but does yours listen?
I guess what I am saying is that today brought clouds and wind (a welcome change) and those were world, and I heard something.
finally finding a little poetry…been kinda dry lately
How Does the Artist See
ย
that I carry
like the heaviness of a pack
on my body
the incalculable weight
of my loving her
needing support
for the imbalance
reaching out
to ordered objects
as a result
of a knee
that was bad
from the get-go
and bites at every bending
chained as it is
to my enormous hoary head
full and sprouting tangly thoughts
so that I face in all directions
begging mercy
of these stocks
that I create

I’m running through files trying to organize things and adjust to a new computer. ย Once in a while I stumble on something I hardly remember making but still feel a deep accord with. ย This was one of those things. ย I think it stands for. ย Still. ย What.
(i only wish it were still freezing)
Here goes:
Moment: Airy
(being an experiment, in theory
a result)
ย
It is hard.
It is hard and it is cold.
Hard as in difficult.
Each thing.
And cold because of the weather.ย Well below the freezing point.ย But his gloves staid on, his lips held a cigarette, and he boxed.
He could box that paper.ย That paper-thin page.ย Already beaten to a pulp.
Him with a theory.
The theory a sort of equation.
The equation as follows:
ALL (whatever a person is, has, does) + ALL (a person’s skill, effort, strength, talent, knowledge and ability)
= Appearance of Art (momentarily)
Notation:ย A + A = AA
An utter mystery to him.
So he sat in the freezing cold, a pen in his hand, the ink sludging slow, paper on a desk, digging/ exposing / exploring himself, believing / composing / revising language,
oh, and the catalyst necessary to the actual experimentation of this theory โ (he writes) โ MAKING
One had always to be making (working, acting, writing, performing) with ALL (of him or herself) and ALL (of one’s capacities, faculties and tools) to carry out this experiment, i.e. to test the hypothesis.
Catalyst: (he notes) making (out of/into/with/toward)
Source and goal (purpose, intent) unnecessary, indifferent
Any action requires an energy source.ย In this case: living organism possessing capacities, perhaps even proficiencies, and coffee, and cigarettes.
No specified laboratory or station or constituents (conditions) to each his own [marginalia]
Quite a simple test really.
Requiring no great funding, no special services or permissions, few qualifications, variant supplies.
Simply vast amounts of time and consistent (persistent) and enormous amounts of effort. (As he saw it).
Reviewing centuries of other experimentations and practitioners of this simple eternal test led him to observe : “results in momentary airy results”
(often discovered in different places at different times dependent on observer โ even in same test results โ thus airy, ephemeral moments)
Feeling he had yet to produce an AA.ย A momentary Appearance of Art, he was compelled to introduce a compendium of criteria โ identifiable attributes โ whereby to justly analyze resultant artifacts and actions.
Again the qualities boiled down quite simply:ย put the equation into reverse for the observer or verifying assistant:
an Appearance of Art results through the remaking process or catalyzation of the observer,
requiring as a result, ALL of the observer’s person and ALL of the observer’s capacities,
faculties, abilities.
Notation: criteria for AA to be AA:
AA = (must equal) A + A
He practiced this experiment from both sides of the equation โ attempting to verify Appearances of Art by engaging / observing / remaking results that demanded enormous effort, large amounts of time and all of his experience and capacities, and as the performer of the experiment โ devoting vast amounts of time, energy and effort of his total self to the making of Appearances of Art.
It wasn’t going well.
It is hard (extremely difficult)
And it happens to be very cold (causation: weather in Winter)
He’d read of other conditions explicated by practitioners before him: contingencies such as warmth, geographical position, silence, wealth, solitude, suffering (the Ss came up quite often); specific environments, times or places, assistant substances or particular tools or resources, even difficulty itself had been recorded โ but there seemed to be no rhyme or reason, certainly no agreement, in fact, very often direct and incommensurable contradictions between one catalystic experimentor of A + A = AA and the next, which led to his marginal note (copied above): โto each its ownโ
He carried on, in spite of the grave difficulties, confusions and multivalent referents of the equation’s elements.ย Once in awhile he believed he had discerned a momentary result โ an appearance of art in his own private performances of the experiment; unfortunately he could not obtain verification of his tests from contemporary scholars/students/or adepts of the ancient and cryptically-clear equation.
He had no trouble himself verifying most attested AAs, given sufficient time and effort, but, as he progressed in his work, identification became more efficient yet verification demanded more and more of him, devouring his time, energy and effort, interfering with and greatly complicating his own experiments and test cases from the equation’s other end.
He began to understand why past personages were led to choose to practice and perform the experiment from one side or the other.
It is hard.
It is cold.
And there is only so much time and effort.
There is only so much living organism to be had.
Limitations began to seem insurmountable.
But by now he had come too far.
There was only to go on.
It is hard, he wrote.
It is hard and it is cold, he recorded.
Hard as in difficult.
Each thing.
And cold because of the weather.
But my gloves stay on, he wrote, and my lips still hold a cigarette, right to the end.
His gloved hand fighting the pages.
There is only so much life.

Guess we’re getting personal now – here’s some of the family at work!

โI would stop celebrating loss, if I could figure out what replaces itโ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย In the way I describe the barn, can you feel it?ย The barn is rugged and old but stays dry.ย Light would find its way in if sun ever broke through.ย But the world here is moist and grey.ย A totaling overcast with a ground and a sky making one thickened thing.ย The green of the trees turned so dark that the world peers back black and white.ย That austere, filled with that many increments.
A perhaps melancholy is more like a humidy cold.ย You can perceive it in your clothes.ย They cling, they hang, they weigh.ย And saturate skin, that feels parched with age, like wax in its melting, still and gone down.ย You slow there.ย Drudge, trudge, move (if you move) like a worm at its creep โ that claustrophobic a wriggling.
Almost struggle, but lacking the fight.
A zeroing out โ the observance of something undoing, with the added false pretense of fate.
Resemblance: tectonic.ย Some slow, massive shifts, imperceptible morphing, glacial advances โ a grind without wounding, pulverized and smothered with a winter wool blanket, a lowering lid made of iron.ย And you sit there: gaze through the cracks at the drips from the eaves, life runneling away and absorbed.ย Inconsequent with only replenishing leakage.ย A purgatory.
As the greying deepens to charcoal.ย Vision unhinges, becomes soft streaky fades, you were never looking at or out, your eyes simply open.ย Somewhat.ย Toward nowhere.
In full dissolution.ย Not staring, not gazing, not perceiving โ what to call it?ย The mechanics are working, if asked.ย There is a park, there are trees, there are children, playing in rain like a sprinkler.ย The bars of equipment are red, green and blue, but really theyโre grey, just not actually.
A world made of asphalt.ย The windows, your flesh, the skein on your eyes.ย Grey-gravelly sky without markings, just mottled.ย Movement has slowed to match outlines of concrete, the grasses are cracks, and the trees, the trees and the trucks, buildings and cars โ simply humps, objects unleveling the vastness of road.ย The endless.ย The nowhere.ย A world made of asphalt โ surely some assโs fault.
And thatโs where you are, granite soldier.ย Sculpted in the belly of earth, steady to the line, so much of you crumbled to time, and yet faithful.ย You take up the spaces youโre supposed to, supposingโฆwhat?ย That there must be a reason you sat down.ย Feel this way.ย With capability only to stare.ย Without seeing.
You wonder if something has come or has gone, like a season โ expected but oft overlooked as it passes โ until another takes place.ย Like that.ย Like waiting, without anticipation, there being there for which to wait.ย Is that really waiting?
Endurance as endlessly patient.ย But patience expects changes as well.ย No change occurs here.ย Here just continues, inconsecutively and vague.
The owl at its nightly watch.ย The worm at work in its tunnels.ย The mayfly at its twenty-third hour.ย The one that never ends.ย It goes on.
โIn my room on 32nd Streetโฆ
โฆwords dissolve as theyโre spokenโฆโ
with all that drizzle
and no intent.
If it were loss, youโd have lost something or had something to gain, but that is not so.ย It continues.ย Everything here, nothing to replace = now.ย You bow your head slightly, just off to the left.ย Your hand curls about the armrest.ย At one point you swallowed a drink.ย Your legs have crossed and uncrossed.ย And that is all.ย You wait without waiting.ย The barn is so old but stays dry.ย You probably just sit in your room, the barn imagined like memories.ย Still you seem dry to the touch, though you feel drowned in a heavying damp.ย You sit, you go on.ย You look, itโs unclear.ย It is dim.ย It goes on.
