This one developed into a series. Β My wife’s art works are all about the house and I move them here and there for various inputs/effects on my brain as I work…She recently hung a few encaustic pieces in our dining room where I have been writing due to the heat in our studio attic. Β For “dreaming” I’d had the idea that I’d challenge myself with my Pantech phone and try to take some pictures of my head and smear it up without help from photoshop or other treatments. Β It grew into a little series, beginning with her pieces and their slow consumption of my world.
A Contradiction
A Contradiction in 73 words
A principal aspect in being human is opening to change.Β First one thing, and then another.Β To be deceptive.Β By which we mean adaptive and successful.Β The insurance one will thrive.Β If only one.Β βThat which differs from itself is in agreementβ (Heraclitus).Β I understand.Β Weβre talking tension, balance, strain β a relation.Β Stitching together in hopes it will hold while everything tears.Β If we equate human being with living.Β It changes.Β We adapt.

The Temptress in 78 words
Her words taste pomegranate – the tart – bitter, erotic, and sweet.Β I tickle them over my teeth with my tongue, trying to untie them.Β I like the way the air glides over them, whispering cool and moist into my ears.Β I swallow.Β She speaks without using her mouth.Β I listen hard.Β So this is what it tastes like?Β Is difficult to digest, it vaguely turns the stomach, and I want more.Β Addicted as I am to the showers of seeds.

79 Word Stories
So a new formal challenge emerges. Β Tipped off by Duotrope, I stumbled on this interesting competition sponsored by the Aspen Writers FoundatinoΒ and Esquire magazine: A short short story of exactly 79 words, judged 25% plot, 25% characterization, 25% theme and 25% originality. Β Why not, right? Β I mean many of us compose 100-word stories (rarely EXACTLY 100, but) for Madison Woods “Friday Fictioneers” photo-prompts…so why not give 79 a shot, eh? Β So as a little side project over the next month or so I’ll be delivering various aborted attempts…I’d love feedback, but they’ll probably keep appearing anyway! Β Thanks all.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β I slipped there, on my way out.Β I cried.
Someone held me, shaping me thus.Β Thatβs what I heard, but never quite believed.Β So they told me other things, and showed me pictures.Β It began to sound like music, that Iβd made.Β I played.Β And continued to study.Β Soon it was all words and experience and me stumbling away.Β Or sailing back, on rough waters with a rowdy entourage, and fear.Β And love.Β In either direction, Iβm here.

‘Tis Merely Acting (?)
Iβm in the process of reading Girl Imagined by Chance by Lance Olsen, and I am thinking about how easy it is to make up oneβs life.Β Easy and hard, in different ways.Β Like making peanut butter-chocolate milkshakes.
We watched βThe Jonesesβ (obviously a mainstream movie, in that way they have of being consistently predictable and disappointing) last night.Β Internet webs and informational glut, the redolence of media β its imagery and imaginings β makes lying very easy, and βsoft.βΒ In the sense of βwhite lies,β or possibly not malicious, not evil.Β Rather βstealthy,β βclever,β and βcreativeβ manipulations, representations, (e.g. marketing).
I remember when Western Culture (particularly United-States-North-American) synonymed carpe diem with βinvent yourself,β i.e. the militaries βbe all you can be.βΒ I was younger then.
Lying requires duplicity, which requires attention, which requires energy.Β Much like working outside of oneβs home and having a family.Β Or some other role(s).Β What is called βposition,β formerly called a βpoint-of-view.βΒ Often borrowed from corporations or governments, churches or markets, movements or customers, and so forth.Β βWhiteβ lies.Β Duplicities.Β Now this, now that.Β Positioning.
Already multiple (syn. plural), our selves find it natural to lie and adapt and yet not to believe that it is lying.Β First one thing, then another; everything changes while remaining so similar.Β Enough.Β Apparently.Β In other words, subtle repositioning / shape-shifting: therapist foreground, wife background.Β Grunt foreground, husband back.Β Student, son, father, friend.Β Subtle shifts.Β Highlights.Β First one thing, then another, not exclusive (syn. deception).
Not that thereβs anything wrong with it.Β Who associated these terms (βlie,β βdeception,β βmanipulation,β βduplicitousβ and so forth) with something negative in the first place?Β Our histories, sciences, civilizations, arts, militaries, governments, religions, families and businesses are all based on them.Β At some point along every route, things are contradictory, duplicitous, compromised, untrue.Β What is evil about error?Β Efficiency?Β Multiplicity?Β Complexity?
So if an image suits your message, whatever claims necessity, doesnβt it belong?Β Whether βyoursβ or not, itβs resonant, it βfits.βΒ Illustrates the story.Β Well, part of it, at least as viewed from this position, this point-of-view, whichever wherever whomever is being highlighted NOW.
It is as easy to invent yourself as to paste a collage or learn your native language.Β Complex organisms utilizing contexts for their survival and adapting (sort of thing).Β Lizards do it, plants do it, animals and insects do it β all stay alive by subtle shifts and adaptations, presenting themselves as somethings theyβre not (perhaps) β representation, quotation, mimicry β all situationally basedβ¦
We tell each other certain things (stories altering emphases with each recounting, each invention), behave in particular ways in particular environs, accept and follow various rules at various times of our days, because we have no consistent center, we are relative β relatives all of us β one to another, to our world β shifting, adapting, multiplicitousβ¦each lie leading toward some aspect of what we name truth, like sides of a liquid coin.
Our trouble is that we are unable to be there and not be there, as weβd like to think.Β Itβs all responsibility.Β Our flexibility, agility, ability to respondβ¦organism to context like a movie screen flickering now this, now that, hold focus, here blur, this angle, these lights, little more information, tone down the emotion, play up the cheer, empathize, stand firm, show authority, be gentle, shift shift shift shiftβ¦perspective position your point-of-view.Β Highlight, accent, select…
Carpe Diem.Β Seize this moment, this day, be all that you can be (youβve no idea how expansive and various that is!Β Well, you must have some idea as we watch you change, grow, reveal, conceal, suppress, express, etcβ¦) duplicitously, positionally, shiftily.Β Itβs easy to make up our own lives, to invent ourselvesβ¦
β¦weβre doing it all the time, everywhere.
βTis merely act-ing (being/doing/living) in the world!

Feeling Blind
Feeling Blind
βArt always divides objects and offers a part instead of the whole, a feature of the whole, and no matter how detailed it is, it still is a dashed line representing a lineβ
-Viktor Shklovsky-
βA fragment is not a fraction, but a whole pieceβ
-Lyn Hejinian-
βThose girls!,β we say of our puppies, as if we know.Β As if they behaved like us.Β We are, after all, wild animals, without a master large enough to keep us from fighting.Β The puppies are so small.
I remember filling a large square of canvas (βlargeβ being relative to my body, not a mountain) with loads of spattered paint.Β It felt good and looked neat, even interesting, crammed as it was with accidents and intentions.Β Runs and spills and layers of carefully made strokes.Β Nothing was recognizable or familiar in the result, but Iβd swear it was representation.
Again and again I attempt to feel blind.Β Not empathetically, by tightly wrapping my head and completely covering my eyes with some solid fold of cloth, then wandering through a day or night or week of time.Β Nothing like that.Β Iβm capable of removing my glasses and learning the world without edges or shapes.Β Feeling blind is usually sexual for me.Β In the way I use my senses.Β Itβs never the same if I know what Iβm touching or tasting, hearing or smelling.Β To βfeel blindβ means losing familiar.Β I write blind every day.Β Defamiliarizing myself in order to learn something.Β About language, about emotion, about me and a world of signs.Β Itβs de-meaning.Β Bring me my loverβs body replete with organs and breath, thoughts and flesh, and lay her down beside me.Β Iβll tell you what itβs like.
They like to escape, to cross boundaries.Β If you turn your back, they scamper.Β Theyβll sniff and chew on anything, and leave their feces anywhere.Β Artistic mediums rarely work the way I want them to.Β Paint slips away where I place it thick and neat, clay cracks when it dries or fractures in the fire.Β Words mean something else.Β Her breath creates an atmosphere, moving particles and waves.Β I can smell the colors of her thoughts.Β At this distance it is easy to hear the goosebumps on her shoulder curling forward to her armpit.Β I feel her hair, thick and brown, around my ankles.
I try to use mistakes.Β The pups will eat their poop.Β Her buttocks create parentheses in my dreams.Β If I stack the pieces just so, another thing will happen, come to be.Β Sticks preferable to stuffies.Β The arches of her feet never cease whispering their curving tones.Β I rarely intend what I make.Β They stumble their way to fresh treasures of foul-smelling, old-buried rot.Β Her crotch controls weather, I ache deep in my bones when itβs humid.
It does not cease to amaze me, whatβs found.Β Candy-wrapper, weed-stalk, squirrel-scent.Β Everyoneβs a critic.Β The purposeless finds purpose in the eyes of the beholders.Β The meeting of the needs.Β The way the caps of her knees taste like buttons of mushrooms, just that tiny and soft on my tongue.Β The slogans her scent shouts into my ears, rushing the drums like a throng.Β They drag it until it dissolves.Β Everyone makes up a context.
And eventually tire.Β With ignorance things are recharged.Β She is different when I open my eyes.Β I had registered warm mango with coconut milk, theyβd spilt honey on an old wet rag.Β Apparently the βtrajectory of my new works on paper.βΒ She came with a gasp and a shudder as I deciphered her Braille, she had never liked crowds and my mouth was crowded by terms.Β No one understands it, or perhaps they do and I donβt, pups fast asleep and me feeling so blind with attention.
Men. Amateurs.
Rereading. Β Had forgotten how good.
Or maybe things get better – different – time.
Recommended.
The Incident

The Incident
The evidence was stark and slim.
A photograph of akimbo’d limbs against a whitened sky. Β A dark bird.
The detectives were at a loss, many losses, and uncertain of how to proceed.
They called in “the expert,” a wizened old crackpot retiree who still seemed to capture things no one else could.
He was sent for and trundled his bulk up the sidewalk later that day, grimacing and cursing his way to the station.
Huffing and grunting, he picked up the picture between leathered forefinger and cracked swollen thumb. Β He squinted.
“All I can tell you boys, is that it sho’ ain’t no murder. Β A murder involves always Β more than the one.”
