A Far Story – Samuel Beckett
I wait for me afar for my story to begin, to end, and again this voice cannot be mine. Β That’s where I’d go, if I could go, that’s who I’d be, if I could be.

Alas, Alias

βCat litter,β the last thing said, and something about that abandoned bicycle, a childβs bike, deep red, repainted, left askew on their lawn for days.
Those were the last things.Β The last things she said.Β And so heβd begun to move about much more carefully.Β Timidly some might say, an amalgam of caution and care.Β Ever tender, aware that things break, or tear, spill, or fall apart.Β End.
But then Laramie, his sister, mother, the kids β some entities seem to persist, so few and so stubborn, inexplicably, threatening almost, as if an accumulating disaster, an heavier withdrawal.Β He doesnβt know what to make of it.
Abandonment crushes all scales and statistics β but pebbles and dust, foundations and roots still remain.Β Persistent.Β Resilient.Β Irrational.
Like a sloth he repaired to his desk, as delicate and slow.Β He took up a pen with his head in his hand.Β He was lonely, alone but for quiet, sweet silence, and branches and birdsong and wind, autos and dogs.Β Not quite quiet.Β Not quite alone.Β But abandoned, far as he could surmise.
He wrote.Β Rather drew.Β Looping lines that were shaky on paper.Β Tried to make his operation more smooth.Β It failed.Β He shakes now, does Alias, from drinking and smoking, aging and grief.Β From perspective.Β His perspective.
A rattling undone, an erosion.Β He sighs.
A bike, and βcat litter,β then gone.Β Others had left for much more and much less.Β Litanies of reasons of wrongs are so easy with humans involved, never mind the βweight of the good.βΒ Canβt compete.Β Wonβt compute. There are mistakes, and effort involved β both are failures, no matter the theories or talk, no matter their universality.Β He was wrong and a failure, which equals abandon no matter the words they produced.
Alas, Alias.Β A depression.Β An outlook that colors the field, but itβs charcoal.Β No matter the βwhomβ it will bleed, run them dry, and disfigure.Β No oneβs withstood it for long, for all of his kindness and passion (devised to distract from the swallowing dark, or the primer β his base coat is death).Β Heβs alone.
Not a Laramie, mother, or kin.Β Without doubt thereβs no lover, no friend.Β Just a man and his books and incessant grey thoughts, and a pen.
He begins, looping linesβ¦forming βCat litter,β the last thing she saidβ¦

Meta-Recursion: Some thoughts on the task of writing

Life becomes ideas, and ideas come to life
Maurice Merleau-Ponty
Metacognition is a buzzword these days β as contemporary sciences dive in to the neuro, neuron, chemistry and activity of bodily systems, we get to βseeβ our activities and βthinkβ about them in different possible ways.Β Our sciences concoct novel theories and processes, instruments and concepts and categories with regularity, and then our cultures absorb and incorporate these beliefs into our self-understanding and relating.Β Metacognition βthe awareness or understanding [ha!] of oneβs own thought processesβ is just such a theory – one writers have long thought about and acted as if, never without problematics.
Recursion, or, βthe repeated application of a recursive procedure or definition,β is another one β looped and locked in repetitive activities in which our procedures and language βrelate to or involve a program or routine of which a part requires the application of the whole, so that its explicit interpretation requires in general many successive executions,β each successive stage affected by the previous and effecting the following, the inside / the outside, the near / the far, the experienced & imaginary, the art / the life.Β Endless recursion within a reigning myth of metacognitionβ¦and I am writing.
A writer knowing that Iβm (a shifting pronoun) writing so also knowing that Iβm writing about knowing that Iβm writing (yet uncertain or finitely unable to ascertain all that entails) while Iβm writing and therefore writing about that as well as what Iβm writing, and so onβ¦pertains to language, truthfulness, reason, perception, behavior and any other human activityβ¦complex and recursive in a culture professing metacognition as a possibility.
This complicates writing in tremendous ways.Β It becomes very difficult when composing letters and spaces to evaluate anything as βimpossible.β
Quantum sciences, computer technologies, object-oriented ontologies and anthropocenes β complexity, indeterminateness, and relativity all serve as a soup in which we simmer, constraining and affording us opportunities that usher us right up to the edges of our finitude.Β The interconnections (internet) of things (or not!) reminds us we cannot understand or know enough to write knowledgeably about even our own organisms, and also expose us billions of encounters and experiences per day that recursively become within our systems.Β I spread wider and decenter as the membranes that compose me increasingly appear as sieves.
The larger and smaller scales of life may not be operating like our daily experience, yet we often refer to our lives as βdaily rounds.βΒ Relativity and indeterminateness and reversals of such equations, undo previous comprehensions of the filters of space and time, even as the Western βhistoricalβ sense of narrativity and order comes undone, tangling in its possible untangling as potentially βsolvedβ in multiple directions at onceβ¦leaving us directionless and indeterminate per any βcorrespondence to reality or βtruth.ββΒ Selah.
We must have experienced by now toggling between subject and object in any situation, and to whatever degrees our systems are genetically alike they are multitudinously variant as well.Β We are currently aware that our perceptive calculations of our contexts are hypothetical or apply in very limited specificitiesβ¦i.e., ONCE.Β So our taxonomies flux, our histories alter, our cognition and perception get meta-statized, and language becomes a wobbling sign in Big Weather.Β Waves and warps, folds and possible interjections.
Apparently it might all be in-formation, movements accessible through relation for operationalizing.
Our βsubject matterβ dissolves since we no longer have a subject acting through a predicate, but all matter interacting in theorized randomness and happenstance with nary a drive to avoid extinction.Β Hosts of events (plot?) with endless extrapolations or interpretations, wherein things long distant and disparately far might βfold inβ or βwarp pastβ or correlate via some vibration β and perhaps they do? (memory as a pass of βreversalβ in subjective time?)
I am writing.Β And so all this must be written, in our stories and imaginary objects, holding nothing, requiring application of the whole and very many successive executions.Β Sounds ominous, but the terminus thusfar we can still count on.Β It will end (for us, as we experience it).Β It must be written β increasingly aware of all I do not / most likely cannot know or understand, and that nothing experienced βfits togetherβ while belonging together in ways we havenβt been able to imagine, fragments fed by fragments feeding fragments inseparably fluidβ¦and I write, I try to write it, in channels of existent vocabularies and beliefs inaccurately scoped.
I (whatever that means) seem to be writing with an awareness that I-am-more-not-I-than-I or I is tenuously distinguishable or occasional, and am writing that I am writing while I am writing that I am thinking about writing which thinking is happening through various media like paper and pen and keyboard and digital text and electricity and air and an incalculable and miniscule trajectory of experience waving particles undone and mutated, I adapt, to no purpose (it is theorized) and go on or along and keep writing unaware even of what I am aware of and operationalize a tiny selection of language flooded with other usages and contexts and I write we write it writes as its writing.
“it is through my writing that I keep a hold on life” β Franz Kafka
And, holding nothing, I am unable to stop.
You must go on.Β I canβt go on.Β Iβll go on.
Samuel Beckett
Without Criteria: Laramie

Laramie shoots and kills.Β Laramie loves and captures.Β Catches and release.
Riding along the ridge, singing, swearing, singing.Β This journeyβs a long time coming.
The need to get away.Β For autonomy.Β To be self-called.Β To begin after all of this and that.Β Recall and resound.Β Taking stock.
Heβs always been this way β a little undomesticated.Β A touch of untamed wild.Β Never finding a place.Β Never quite belonging.
Boundaries forged by relation and response (-ability) all forwarding to limits, cages, toward constraints or restraint he can not abide.Β Each vocation or program, discipline or field, replete with vocabularies and methods, praxis and behaviors misfitting to degrees he finds it hard to accept.Β A βlone wolf,β βself-made man,β a patent failure or βwith no name.βΒ Renegade?
He rides.Β The shuffling flanks feel heavy under him, providing awareness of his own weight.Β Considers Alias, and thinks how both do not belong.Β How adamant and vehement he himself cries freedom, how Alias skinnies and wriggles past the gates.
How neither could ever be said to have βsucceeded.βΒ How both (in his mind) would never have failed.Β How neither and both are alike.Β Neither and both are so different.Β Neither and both alive.
Rides on.Β Too old for all this but heβll camp out tonight.Β To prove to himself that heβs old bothΒ and wild.Β Yet.Β That he aches to be tamed and untame.Β Yearns to belong, independently.Β The want for a self that is selfless.Β The urge for a course without banks.
Laramie wants to be world, alive.Β Wants to be fertile and virile, viral, untrained.Β Wants claimed and confessed-for, wants derided and praised.
βWeβre the renegade scholars,β sometimes he wouldΒ say, βlearning the lingo and undoing like acid its heart.βΒ βWe master and tell of its weakness, expert novitiates in all.βΒ βWe unwind and unravel.Β Travel and root.Β We are rhizome,β he says, βdrawn out from anywhere.Β We absorb and vituperate, ingest and expel.β
He rides, and he rides, in love with the muscling flanks.Β The wind tearing through hair and beard, blistering cheeks, stinging his eyes.Β There are tears.Β Laramie swallows.Β The sorrow and joy are one.Β Life and its death copulatingβ¦heaving and sweating, oily and dry to the bone.Β He is brittle.
Laramie is needing to stop, and he feels it.Β His body is singing β pain tells.Β Time is ripe.Β Thereβs an end.Β It is coming.Β Unrolling his packβ¦here it goesβ¦
Alias Impassive

Alias awakens to disquiet.Β Comprehension out of joint.Β The motions, the motions, but nothing complies.Β He does not feel so he touches the knee of his son.Β Yes, he seems to be there.Β Words with their sayings and tellings arenβt meaning.Β Perhaps he hears.Β Feels he doesnβt have pants on, but perceivably theyβre there.Β Goes to bathroom, masturbates, conjuring images of his love.Β Disconnect.Β He is not sure that he is here.Β Or where it is he is.
Not the trees, not the road, not his car.Β Many things are missing.Β Not his thoughts.Β Not pets, not postal service, not sky.Β Heβs come unfastened.
The motions, the motions, he makes coffee.Β The motions, the motions, he showers.Β But did he use shampoo?Β Deodorize his pits?Β Remember the drop of cream?Β Are those his feet?Β Walking into work they all take notice.Β Is he bleeding?Β Checks his hair, his face, his clothing.Β Is he stinking unawares?Β Deactivated and decoupled, unable to correlate.Β Heβs in his chair.
Heβll go for water.Β Heβll check again.Β Heβll look through letters, notes, to-dos, heβll use his fingers.Β He seems inoperable, confused.Β Theyβre noticing.Β He hasnβt spoken.Β He puts on music.Β Sits again.Β He looks at language, hears some sounds.Β Heβs not authorial, nothing gives direction, nothing issues commands.Β Β Β Disjointed and isolate.
He tries to sleep.Β The dreams donβt follow, the eyes donβt rest.Β He is confused.Β He is detached.Β He looks at pictures, attempts a memory.Β Everything is near and quite intangible.Β Everything is distant.Β He cannot cry.Β He cannot feel it.Β He isnβt thinking anymore.Β Something is unhinged.
The motions slow, the motions blur.Β Not conscientious.Β No recognize.Β It seems there are duties.Β It seems related.Β It seems forgotten or never begun.Β Heβs too much there and not enough.Β Unavoidable and out of sorts.Β He cannot hide and there are others.Β He tries the motions, and the motions, and theyβre still without sound.Β He canβt compute.Β Head in his hands on his desk.Β His eyes are burning.Β He canβt find pain, locate discomfort.Β No ability to take account.
He pushes objects.Β Cuts his palm.Β He walks again.Β The motions, the motions.Β There is no wind.Β The sun pervasive.Β He sees some plants.Β They are not there.Β They have not grown. Β He is alone and everything knows this.Β Dissociated.Β Heβll try again.Β What will he try?Β Heβll try the motions, heβll try the motions.
Alias motions with his hand.Β It comes undone, it does not signal, there is no shadow.Β Too much shadow.Β He looks around.Β There are the others.Β They seem to wince, to look too much, to look away.Β There is no commerce.Β There is no passage.Β He sits again.Β He hears a sound.Β He thinks the hearing.Β He tries his luck.Β There is no luck.Β He wants to realize.Β Anything.Β Something.Β Perhaps.Β Maybe.Β Motions, motions, motions.Β He is not moving.Β Things are vacant.
Alias impassive.Β He tries to speak.Β No one to speak with.Β He works at thoughts.Β All misremembered.Β Heβll try again, heβll try the motions, keep at the motions, the motions.Β All the motions he will try.Β He has no purpose.Β The motions fail.Β Vacuous and without intention.Β Was only trying, was just to see. Β He cannot see it.Β The motions fail.Β He moves again.Β Things are dissolving.Β Disestablished.Β Without relation.
He calls the dog, he has no voice.Β Thereβs no response.Β He is within a vast alone.Β He is not happy.Β He is not sad.Β Heβs unaffected.Β He tries the motions.Β He tries again.Β After all he will stop trying.Β Sometime later heβll give up, but now he tries.Β He tries the motions.Β He tries again.Β He is disquiet, and without endβ¦

Parataxis / Parallaxis
parataxis, n.
The placing of propositions or clauses one after another, without indicating by connecting words the relation (of coordination or subordination) between them, as in Tell me, how are you?.
βPARATAXIS, N.β OED ONLINE. OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS, DECEMBER 2015.
Parataxis is a literary technique, in writing or speaking, that favors short, simple sentences, with the use of coordinating rather than subordinating conjunctions (from Greek for βact of placing side by sideβ; from para, βbesideβ and tassein, βto arrangeβ; contrasted to syntaxis or hypotaxis).
It is also used to describe a technique in poetry in which two images or fragments, usually starkly dissimilar images or fragments, are juxtaposed without a clear connection. Readers are then left to make their own connections implied by the paratactic syntax.
WIKIPEDIA CONTRIBUTORS. βPARATAXIS.β WIKIPEDIA, THE FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA

parallaxis, n.
Difference or change in the apparent position or direction of an object as seen from two different points; (Astron.) such a difference or change in the position of a celestial object as seen from different points on the earth’s surface or from opposite points in the earth’s orbit around the sun. Also: (half of) the angular amount of such a difference or change; (Astron.) the angle subtended at a celestial object by the radius of the earth’s orbit, giving a measure of its distance from the earth; any of various similar measures of distance calculated by methods incorporating the motion of the sun relative to the local region of the galaxy, the proper motion of the observed body, the motions of a cluster of bodies having similar distances and speeds, etc.
“parallax, n.” OED Online. Oxford University Press, December 2015. Web. 7 March 2016.
Parallax is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines.Β The term is derived from the Greek word ΟΞ±ΟΞ¬Ξ»Ξ»Ξ±ΞΎΞΉΟ (parallaxis), meaning “alteration”. Β A parallax is the difference in the angular position of two stationary points relative to each other from different viewing positions.
